While making one of the stops, the fire worshiper decided to take revenge on John of Sochavsky and met with the mayor of Belgrade Bosphorus, knowing that they would not have any disputes regarding religion. The captain said that there was a man on his ship who wanted to renounce faith in Christ and join the ranks of fire worshipers. After listening to the guest, the mayor invited the merchant for a conversation.

The result of this meeting was a brutal reprisal against John of Sochavsky. He was beaten with sticks for a long time and persistently, shackled in metal chains and placed in prison. The next day after John of Sochava’s repeated refusal to accept the faith of fire worshipers, the mockery of him continued. The blows of the sticks were so strong that the merchant’s body was literally torn to pieces.

However, the mayor did not stop his revenge for disobedience. John's body was tied to the hooves of a horse, which galloped through the streets for a long time. Residents angrily threw stones at the executed merchant, and one of them, in a fit of hatred, cut off his head.

At night, one of the eyewitnesses saw that a luminous pillar appeared over the body of John of Sochava. At the same time, burning lamps and three luminous men became visible. The local resident was unable to utter a word, and his body instantly went numb. The men performed the ritual with the merchant’s body and disappeared. An eyewitness told city residents about what he saw.

Having learned about such an event, the mayor gave orders for the burial of the remains of John of Sochavsky. So the merchant was numbered among the Saints. Having learned about what had happened and about the change in the mayor’s opinion, the ship’s captain attempted to steal the body of John of Sochavsky.

However, this time a miracle happened. At that moment, when the embittered thief was making his way to the burial place, the image of John of Sochava appeared to the local priest, who warned him about the crime being committed. The theft attempt failed.

Part of the relics of John Sochavsky is now located in the Ascension Cathedral in the city of Belgorod-Dnestrovsk. There is also a spring named after the great martyr. The water in it is believed to have healing properties. Services in the cathedral are held every Friday.

John Sochavsky: who is he?

The governor was very happy with these speeches and ordered John to be brought quickly.

The saint's body was subjected to intolerable torture several times.

John, having come to the ruler, explained that he himself would never refuse or turn away from Christ. The saint also gave advice to the mayor, in which he called him to the true faith - faith in Christ.

The chief was greatly angered by John’s words and ordered the servants to torture the saint. The saint's body was subjected to intolerable torture several times. They beat him with sticks and tied him to a horse until they completely tortured him. John died.

The fact that John was under the protection of God is evidenced by an interesting fact. John's body, after mortal torment, was left near the road. And that night, shining lights and a sparkling staircase came down to him from the sky. Three men came down the stairs and walked over the great martyr. They say that this divine procedure was witnessed by a bad man who tried to kill these holy men with arrows and a bow. But nothing worked out for him, his whole body was paralyzed by heavenly power.

Having learned about this wonderful vision, the ruler of the city allowed the Christians to give the body burial. The embittered captain of the ship tried to steal the saint's body. But John appeared to the local clergyman (in a dream) and warned him. The priest, together with his supporters, forcibly snatched the body from the hands of the lawless man. For more than seventy years, the saint’s relics lay in the city’s temple.

Only in 1402, by order of Prince Alexander the Good, the relics of the saint were transferred to Sochava (after the name of the city, the saint received the name John of Sochava).

After his death, he performed many miracles. The year 1989 is interesting because of an amazing event. One parishioner from a noble family came to the temple with the relics of John of Sochava and did an obscene act: she tried to tear off and tore off for herself a particle of the saint’s relics (specifically a finger). When she got into the carriage and tried to go home, the chariot could not move. And then she realized what she had done, confessed to those around her and returned the particle to its place.
