How to sew a petticoat?

A petticoat or petticoat is an item of clothing designed to create volume in the main skirt. Thanks to this accessory, the outfit looks more feminine and airy. The petticoat is an integral attribute of the style of the 50s, and is also often used in the manufacture of evening and ball gowns.

Most often, an underskirt is used with floor-length or medium-length dresses. The article describes how to sew a simple single-layer and very fluffy multi-tiered petticoat yourself.

Material selection

To make fluffy petticoats, taffeta or tulle are most often used. The stiffer the material you choose, the better the product will hold its shape. Organza, chiffon or regular lining fabric are perfect as the basis for such skirts.

The base can also be made of tulle, but in this case the petticoat will create an unpleasant sensation when worn and may ruin the stockings or the fabric of the main skirt.

How to sew a petticoat without a base

This option is made in the form of a circle skirt. 4 petals are cut out in unfolded form, representing a circle, which are subsequently sewn together.

Materials and accessories:

Instructions:

  1. There are several options for using a petticoat: you can sew it to the bodice (skirt) of the dress or stretch an elastic band into it at the waist. In the first case, measure the circumference of the part of the suit to which you plan to sew a petticoat; in the second, measure the waist circumference.
  2. Divide the resulting number by 16 (4 petals folded 4 times). Remember the result.
  3. Take 4 square-shaped pieces of tulle. The size depends on the expected length of the petticoat. For dresses of medium length, squares with a side of 100 cm are enough. Place the cuts one on top of the other and fold them in half twice.
  4. On central corner you need to measure a line equal in length to the quotient obtained in step 2. You will need to cut an angle along this line.
  5. Set aside the length of the petticoat from the waistline. The latter is usually 4-5 cm shorter than the length of the dress skirt. Cut out the pattern.
  6. You should end up with 4 circles with a hole in the middle. Cut them along the radius lines and sew the parts together along these lines. As a result, you will have a full skirt, the top edge of which is equal to the waist circumference.
  7. Sew a satin ribbon onto the seams at the top and bottom, and use it to trim the bottom edge.
  8. Sew the petticoat to the dress or decorate the top with an elastic band.

This accessory provides uniform volume and does not create folds under clothing at the waist.

Of all the accessories for a wedding dress, the most “modest” and most inconspicuous is the petticoat. He has a lot of merit to his credit. It will create volume, give shape, add elegance, and make the look modest with a see-through overskirt.

This element is vital for princess-style dresses, A-line dresses and short new-look dresses. Therefore, we will consider with you different options for sewing a wedding petticoat, and you can use the model you like for other important outfits.

Simple

First you need to take measurements. This is the circumference of the hips and the length of the petticoat.

To find out the waist width, multiply the hip circumference by the fit factor. Its value is in the range of 1.5-3.5 times. Here it’s up to you to decide how full the skirt will be. The main thing to take into account is that the stiffer the fabric, the lower the coefficient will be.

The length is measured from the waist or where the petticoat will be located to the desired length. However, it should be shorter than the dress.

Now we take a rectangular piece of fabric according to the measurements. You can take any lining fabric that holds its shape well. It is advisable to steam it first so that when washing the finished product there is no shrinkage. Cotton fabric is lined. You can also take mesh (tulle), but in this case the volume at the waist will be large.

Finish the side edges with a double seam or an overlock stitch. Then grind them down. Finish the top and bottom edges with a closed hem stitch. At the same time, leave room in the upper cut for stretching the elastic. The bottom hem should be wider so that the bottom of the skirt holds its shape better. And for rigidity, you can insert a fishing line or crossbar.

Be sure to steam all seams thoroughly. After threading the elastic, sew its ends together into a ring.

Lush

A dress can become magnificent in two cases - the use of rings or multi-layering. It is believed that the latter option is more applicable for non-curvy models, as well as short or medium-length dresses.

If you already have a petticoat with rings, then a multi-layered version will hide the bulging hoops.

Made of tulle for a half-sun skirt

For a petticoat under a half-sun skirt, volume in the waist and hips is not needed. Therefore, the basis will be a semi-sun skirt and tulle frills.

The material you will need is a lining base (calico or silk) and tulle.

Take the necessary measurements for the half-sun skirt (waist size and length), taking into account the fullness of the future dress, and cut it out of the fabric. Process the top.

Be sure to leave room for the elastic to pass through if there is no button or zipper closure.

Ideally, the petticoat should not be visible, but if the model has such an idea, then the hem of the underskirt should match the fabric of the dress. And for decoration use lace or satin ribbon.

Cut out 3-8 rows of ruffles from tulle. The upper tier should cover the fastening seam of the lower tier by 3-4 cm. Therefore, the height of the frill is calculated from the distance between the tiers.

Narrow ones will add fluffiness, but will be able to puff up under the light fabric of the dress, while wide ones will add roundness to the silhouette.

The length depends on the size you choose. The bottom frill should be the fluffiest. Its length can be safely multiplied by 3.

Each cut out frill must be sewn into a ring along the side cut. Process the bottom.

Place one or two lines along the upper edges to tighten evenly. Stitch the tightened rings to the desired size. If you wish, you can make bookmarks by hand and then stitch them on a typewriter.

All that remains is to try on the petticoat along with the dress. If the petticoat gets very tangled in the legs, then sew on a weighting agent, soft wire or regilin, making a narrow drawstring.

From mesh on rings

So as not to get tangled in multi-layered skirts all day long wedding dress, let's sew a petticoat with rings.

From the mesh, make a skirt of the desired volume, which determines the number of rings and their length. You can use a half-sun, sun or six-piece skirt as a basis. In this case, the wedges should correspond to 1/4 of the circle.

The simplest petticoat you can come up with is the “Tatyanka” skirt. Even the youngest and novice seamstresses will be able to sew such a skirt.

All we need is a rectangular piece of fabric.

I will show the process of sewing a Tatyanka skirt using the example of making an underskirt (petticoat) for a dance costume. Silk lining fabric. Skirt length 30 cm when finished, 36 cm when cut. The width of the skirt over the entire width of the fabric, i.e. 150cm (more about cutting the skirt - Tatyanka.

The side seam can be processed by stitching with overcasting, or you can do without overcasting and do it.

Fold the side sections of the fabric facing outwards and sew a seam width of 4-5 mm (Fig.a). Trim the cuts if they are wider than necessary. Turn the seam inside out and make a second stitch at a distance of 6-7 mm from the edge (Fig.b). Iron the seam (Fig. c).

Process the upper cut (Fig.d), leaving a distance between the beginning and end of the stitching of 1-1.5 cm for pulling the elastic (Fig.e). By using safety pin pull the elastic through and sew its ends together into a ring (Fig. e).

The bottom cut should also be processed, only wider, so that the bottom of the skirt holds its shape better. I made the width of the hem 2 cm, which means the first time I folded it by 1 cm, the second time by 2 cm.

Iron the skirt and the skirt is ready!

You don't really like her appearance? But this is an underskirt to add fullness to the sun skirt.

And if you sew “Tatyanka” as an overskirt, then it is advisable to pull the elastic along the upper edge not in one row, but in 2 or 3 rows. In this case, a beautiful contrast is created between thin waist and a voluminous skirt.

You can improve the silhouette with a lower frill. But more on that next time.

My blog is found using the following phrases

It is useful for lovers of fluffy dresses and mothers of girls to know how to sew a petticoat with their own hands, because in fact it is very simple. Petticoats began to be used a long time ago, but since themed parties in the style of the 50-70s are very popular today, the issue has become relevant again. In this article you will learn how to sew a petticoat step by step and how to decorate the product. It's actually very easy to do this.

MK “How to sew a petticoat from tulle”

Materials for production:

  • Fatin.
  • Batiste or any other natural fabric for lining.
  • Elastic band for the belt, 2 cm wide.
  • Thread, scissors, sewing machine.

First you need to take measurements: the length of the skirt from the waist and the circumference of the hips. The basis of this petticoat is the half-sun style. It is sewn from tulle, and subsequently frills are sewn onto it. Since the skirt will have elastic, we will determine the width of the parts by dividing the length of the product by 3. The cambric element will be equal to 1/3 of the length, and the tulle element will be 2/3.

Cut out 2 pieces from natural fabric. Calculate the width in advance using the formula given above. The length will be equal to the waist circumference.

Decide on the number of layers of tulle. The more of them, the more magnificent the petticoat will be. From tulle, cut out elements with a length equal to 2/3 of the size of the product. The width will be equal to six waist circumferences. If necessary, the tulle parts can be longer or shorter.

Let's move on to outlining the product. We sew the cambric parts together with a needle along the short side and make a machine seam. We need to insert an elastic band into the product along the width. To do this, tuck the element and stitch at a distance of a centimeter from the edge.

Sweep away the tulle, making folds. Sew it to the underside of the cambric piece. There can be quite a lot of tulle elements. They are tuned to one another. It all depends on how full of a petticoat you need.

Now we need to insert the elastic band. Attach a pin to its end and thread it through the hole. Sew the ends of the elastic.

If desired, the petticoat can be edged satin ribbon. Using this principle, you can sew a full-fledged skirt for a girl. Several of these petticoats look original. different colors, put on at the same time.

Frilly petticoat

The pattern of the half-sun skirt is taken as the basis. We will put frills on it. The waist of the skirt is gathered with a hat elastic.

In order to build a pattern, you need to take two radii:

(R1)—for the waist.

Measure your hip circumference (H) and add 10 cm, divide by 3.14.

The radius of the skirt below is R2. You need to add R1 to the length.

Fold the fabric in half. From the top edge of the fold, draw two radii.

We cut the petticoat

Unfold the fabric in one layer and mark the points where the ruffles will be. Step back 20 cm from the waist and draw a line down. The longest frill (top) will be sewn along this element.

Depending on the height of the product, we calculate the length of the petticoat. If the length is maxi, we divide it into three parts, and midi into two halves. We draw lines at equal intervals. The bottom frill comes first. It is the shortest. Behind it is the middle one, which should overlap the previous one, since it is twice as long. These elements are covered top part. It is long and will overlap the two previous parts.

Calculation of frill length

Now you need to calculate the length of each of them. To find out, measure the length of the line along which it is attached. The frill will be three times longer than it. For the bottom one you will need three strips of three meters each, that is, its length will be 9 meters. For the middle element there are two strips of 3 meters each. Total length 6 meters. The top frill will consist of one strip 3 meters long.

Sewing a petticoat

Now we need to sew a petticoat from tulle. Let's look at the process step by step. On the half-sun skirt, mark the points for sewing on the ruffles. Lay out the product in one layer. Under no circumstances should you assemble the entire base before sewing on the ruffles! They are much easier to attach to a flat part.

Each of them needs to be folded twice lengthwise and ironed along the fold with an iron. Unfold it and run a machine seam along the fold. Select the largest stitch size.

The unfolded middle of the frill should be placed on the edge of the skirt. Pin it with needles. You need to fix it by stepping back 1.5 cm from the edge in order to stitch the parts with a machine without catching the frills.

Advice! A little trick from experienced seamstresses: Visually divide the petticoat into 4 parts and do the same with the frill. Pin the frills according to these parts. Then pull the thread and the folds will be evenly distributed along the skirt. Fix the frills frequently to prevent them from moving out of place.

Sew the frill and skirt using a machine stitch. Remove needles and landing stitch. Perhaps one frill will be enough for you to make a petticoat for something made of translucent fabric. In this case, only the edge will be lush. The bottom will look flirty and give the skirt a little fluffiness, but at the same time the product will be weightless. The remaining frills are sewn in the same way.

Let's move on to assembling the skirt along the seam. If you are sewing a product from a soft material, then the seam allowances need to be smoothed out.

Take a hat elastic 3-4 cm wide. Its length should be equal to the waist circumference plus 3 cm. Place the ends of the elastic one on top of the other with an allowance of 1.5 cm. Sew it with a zigzag.

We pin the elastic to the top of the skirt in four places. Stretch to the edges of the petticoat and sew the edge of the elastic with a zigzag stitch. It's better if it's two lines.

Last step: Sew the layers of ruffles in a circle. Place the edges of the seam on top of each other and connect with an overlay seam. So we figured out how to sew a fluffy petticoat from tulle step by step.

Tutu or petticoat without a sewing machine

Mothers who do not know how to use sewing machines will need information on how to sew a petticoat without a machine and special knowledge of cutting and sewing. For this we need tulle and a hat elastic. Measure your daughter's waist and add three centimeters. Connect it into a ring. Cut the tulle into strips 4-5 cm wide. For convenience, pull the elastic band over the back of the chair. Take a strip of tulle and tie it to it. The ends of the fabric should be the same. The appearance of the skirt will depend on the number of stripes. You can even show this to a teenage girl, since sewing a petticoat from tulle in this way is very simple.

How to decorate a petticoat for a girl

We have already figured out how to sew a tulle petticoat for a girl. We also found out that such a product can become an independent wardrobe item. Designer decor can add a special mood to a product.

The bottom of the petticoat can be edged with satin braid or ribbon. You can sew small flowers made of fabric, foamiran or even leather onto the product. Don't limit your imagination! Feathers, beads, sequins, balls felted from wool of different colors can also serve as decoration. For the winter version, knitted elements are suitable. A fluffy light skirt trimmed with fur will look stunning.

If your baby plays the role of a snowflake or snow maiden, then the bottom of the product can be sheathed with lush “rain”. For a suit ladybug small circles of black felt, scattered on the red background of a skirt or a peeking out petticoat, are suitable.

Tutu skirts made of tulle can be worn not only by little ladies. Grown-up girls can use this simple and inexpensive material to sew matching bridesmaid dresses.

For a petticoat with frills, choose soft tulle, then it will be light and airy. This outfit will make it easy for you to move. Hard tulle leaves a lot of puffs on tights or stockings. In addition, it can simply tear them. The edges of a product made of rigid fabric may prick your feet. The big downside to a frilly petticoat is that it takes up a lot of fabric.

Now you know how to sew a tulle petticoat with your own hands. Delight yourself and your daughters or sisters with new clothes and be beautiful at any time of the year!

How to sew a simple tulle petticoat?

Set of necessary items:

  • 3m tulle for the petticoat;
  • 0.5 m of fabric per skirt;
  • 0.5 m of narrow (about 1 cm) elastic band;
  • 3m satin ribbon for the bottom edge of the petticoat.

Why is there so much more tulle than all the skirt fabric? Because, in order to be fluffy, it needs to be attached under the skirt in an assembly of many folds.

Keep in mind that all figures are given as approximate ones - just so that you understand the proportions in which the prepared materials should be related. You can calculate the true numbers from your own measurements and compare them with these proportions.

The width of the parts is determined as follows: measure the length of the skirt and divide it into 3 parts - 1 part will be the width of the skirt, the remaining 2 will be the tulle.

The length of the tulle is calculated based on six waist circumferences, and the width is 2 parts from the previous measurement.

The fabric parts are sewn along the short side, and along the long side they are folded, about 1.5, and stitched so as to create a cavity for the elastic.

Tulle is sewn in even folds along the underside of the skirt.

Using a pin or paper clip, place the rubber band into the cavity.

Now a satin edging is attached to the lower edge of the tulle and all that remains is to stitch the fabric with tulle from the inside.
