How to beautifully lengthen women's jeans. How to lengthen jeans.

23.10.2017 Style and fashion

If the jeans have become short due to frequent washing or the child has simply grown up, do not rush to throw them away. Jeans can be lengthened. Denim fabric is unique in its kind, you can choose a variety of finishes for it and no one will even guess that it was not there originally. And jeans with such finishing will look more impressive. Also, using finishing, you can decorate small abrasions and tears.

For the rework we will need thick lace ribbon or wide braid. Its width should match the length to which you want to lengthen the jeans. If the width of the tape is greater than the length of the extension, then the cut-off part of the jeans can simply be trimmed, and if it is less, then another row of insertion can be made. When making calculations, do not forget about seam allowances.

The insertion location can be any. You can sew the lace above the knee or below the knee. I decided to insert the lace closer to the bottom of the jeans. There was a scuffed strip left from the previous hem.

We hem one side seam (preferably an internal one, if there is no stitching).

We process the edges with a zigzag.

Lace can be sewn in two ways.

1 way

We turn the edge (5 mm) to the wrong side, iron it or sew the needle forward with the seam.

Above, without stretching denim fabric, add a lace ribbon. I don't cut the tape right away. First I sew it on, and then I trim off the excess.

It turns out neatly, but the seam is very thick.

Method 2

I liked method 2 better, when the edge does not turn up. We retreat a little from the processed edge and adjust the lace on top with a zigzag.

The seam is thinner and looks more neat.

But in this case, you need to stitch the lace so that the zigzag stitch is not visible above the lace, and the finished edge is almost invisible through the lace.

In the same way, we sew the bottom of the jeans to the lace ribbon. Do not stretch the denim fabric; its length should exactly match the lace ribbon.

These jeans had a small rip at the knee. Previously, it was decorated with sequins, but on the knee the sequins quickly lost their appearance.

Therefore, we rip off the sequins.

The tear needs to be stitched up. It is best to glue it with adhesive interlining from the wrong side and mend it using a typewriter.

We decorate the top with the same lace ribbon.

We arrange the ribbon as we like and cut it off.

Where necessary, rip out the side seams.

On one side, the seam needs to be opened wider to allow the sewing machine foot to fit.

Turn the jeans inside out.

And through the opened side seam we attach a lace ribbon with a rare zigzag.

Sew up the side seams. We process the edges with a zigzag and our updated jeans are ready.

Instead of a belt, you can use a belt made from the same lace ribbon.

Denim fashion trends allow for a variety of inserts.

Friends, hello everyone. Today we’ll look at another sewing operation useful in everyday life. It will be especially relevant for mothers of small children who quickly outgrow the purchased clothes. This will be a simple master class that any novice needlewoman can handle - about what to do if your pants become too small.

My child has corduroy children's winter pants, which are the right size for us in terms of hip volume (width), but have become a little short in length. It was a pity to part with them, because appearance they have preserved it, and in cold weather they keep warm perfectly. However, it is not recommended for a child to wear short jeans - their feet begin to freeze, because children are constantly on the move. But what to do if you don’t dare throw a good item out of your wardrobe? You haven’t planned to buy new pants yet.

In this case, you can make beautiful extensions from fabric, or cuffs in another way, which will add length to our short jeans. Rolling up jeans and trousers is still considered fashionable - and we will create this trend on children's pants with our own hands.

How to lengthen pants and jeans yourself and quickly

So let's get started. As always, we will need: a sewing machine, sewing tools - scissors, tailor's pins, fabric to match the color of our pants. If you have not found a suitable fabric, you can use a texture or print (pattern) that matches.

I take corduroy, but in a different color, I will combine burgundy with blue. In terms of color combination, these two shades are friendly with each other, so I will boldly use them.

1. I take our children's winter pants, rip out the hem at the bottom and measure the width of the leg - 14 cm.

2. I multiply 14 by 2 and add 2 cm for seam allowances. We get 30 cm. This measurement is the width of the cuff. The length of the cuff can be determined visually: estimate how many centimeters you would like the trouser leg to be turned up and multiply this number by two + 2 cm by allowances. I want my cuff to be 6 cm, so its length will be 14 cm. I cut out two rectangles 14 x 30 cm. At the same time, I cut out cuffs of the same size from the lining fabric.

3. I fold the lining fabric and corduroy with the right sides inward and pin them together. Using a sewing machine I connect these two segments together.

4.Adjusting the seam allowance for the lining fabric

5.I lay out the cuffs as shown in the photo and fasten them with tailor’s pins. Using a machine, I make a stitch in the places where the pins are chipped, retreating 1 cm from the edge.

6.I iron the seam using an iron and an ironing iron (gauze).

7.Fold the cuffs in half, right sides out. You get two “pipes” like this.

8. I turn the children's winter pants inside out and put them on the cuffs. I connect the cuffs to the trouser leg with pins from the inside, as shown in the photo. In the places where the pins are chipped, I make a stitch on the machine, retreating from the edge by 1 cm.

9. I process the cut of the connection between the cuff and the trouser leg using an overlocker.

10.Now you can roll up children's corduroy jeans. I turn the cuff to the desired length - 6 cm. And along the side seams I manually attach it to the trouser legs so that it holds. I don’t adjust the cuffs to the trouser leg, this way they look more relaxed and neat.

Side seam fastening

Jeans have held a strong position at the top of fashion for many years. Every fashionista in her wardrobe has at least one ideal pair of jeans in the right shade, size and model, highlighting all your strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, it is doubly offensive when they shrink during washing, the bottom of the trouser legs frays and spoils the appearance. And young mothers know very well that children grow faster than we can update their wardrobe. And we have a logical question: how to lengthen short jeans? Some interesting ways You will find solutions to a similar problem in this review.

How to lengthen short jeans?

Nowadays, jeans have become not just fashionable clothing, but a way of life, a symbol of youth and creativity. We wear them to work, we wear them when we go for a walk with the children. And when traveling, they are simply irreplaceable, because they are strong, do not stain, do not wrinkle and, in general, make us stylish. Therefore, we want to offer several ways to lengthen short jeans. To begin, arm yourself with patience, a good mood and imagination. The process ahead will be painstaking, but interesting.

To work you will need:

  1. Scissors.
  2. Blade.
  3. Threads to match the fabric.
  4. Decoration Materials.

Method 1

Jeans must be washed and ironed. Look at how they are folded - they usually use a hem stitch with a closed cut. In this case, we have an additional 3-4 cm after ripping, which may be enough to lengthen the jeans.

How to proceed:

  1. Using scissors or a razor blade, carefully open the seam from the inside.
  2. Remove thread scraps.
  3. Smooth the seam with an iron and a steamer; if you don’t have one, use a wet cloth.
  4. You need to iron first from the wrong side, and then from the front.
  5. From denim, cut out strips of the width you need for lengthening.
  6. Place right sides together with the legs, mark, then stitch using a sewing machine.
  7. Fold back the fabric and iron the seam well.
  8. Fold the bottom of the strip and hem it by machine or by hand.

Method 2

To lengthen your jeans by 2-3 cm, you will need a hem tape - it is sold in any sewing department:

  1. Place the tape on the bottom of the galoshes, aligning the edges.
  2. Sew, retreating from the edge of the product 2-3 mm.
  3. Fold inward and iron.
  4. Sew again or make a blind seam by hand.
  5. Steam the finished work using an iron (wet cloth) from the front side.

Method 3

You can correct the length of denim trousers using fabric of a suitable texture, imitating cuffs or cuffs. It can be similar in color, or, on the contrary, it can be contrasting due to color and pattern. This option is good for children's clothing.

Sequence of work:

  1. Cut out a strip of the desired width and fold it right side together with the jeans.
  2. Mark and stitch.
  3. Unfold the strip and press the seam.
  4. On the front side, you can lay a finishing stitch using tone-on-tone or contrasting threads.
  5. From the same fabric, to maintain an aesthetic appearance, you can make trim on the belt (patas), on the pockets - a stripe or applique.

Method 4

The next saving option is suitable for lengthening and decorating jeans in the “boho chic” style for little and adult girls. Lace, silk and nylon ribbons, fringe from different materials, braid with ethnic patterns. Make ruffles from wide, non-knitted lace or ribbon. Hem to the bottom of the trouser legs or topstitch.

If you need to lengthen your jeans significantly, sew narrow braid and lace in rows onto any similar fabric. Then sew to the galoshes, as in the previous methods. A crocheted tie will look very interesting, especially if you wear an openwork crocheted sweater, or complement your look with a bag made using the same technique.

We hope that thanks to these simple steps, you will be able to lengthen your jeans at home without resorting to the services of a sewing workshop. And they will serve you for a long time.

Instructions

Before starting work, you need to wash and iron your trousers. It is also worth looking at how the trousers were hemmed before your intervention. More often jeans simply hemmed and then stitched. In this case, your task is greatly simplified. You need to open the hem on both legs. Then carefully select all the threads from the former seam.

Then wet the bottom of your pants. Try to iron them so that the fold lines are not noticeable. If this doesn’t work the first time, try re-ironing it so that the fabric wrinkles as little as possible in these places.

Then place the pieces right sides together. After this, place the long edge of the strip on the bottom of the pant leg. Now baste and sew on the machine. Fold back and press the seam.

Now the sewn strip needs to be bent as it is done when simply processing the bottom of the product. Baste the resulting hem and then hand sew with a seam that will not be visible from the outside of the trousers. In this way you can lengthen your trousers by 2-3 cm.

At first glance, it seems that hemming jeans is very simple; all you need is a sewing machine and sharp scissors. But in fact, a novice seamstress is faced with a number of problems, such as thick material, especially at the seam joints, which can cause the needle to break, the need to select threads for the rest of the seams, and many others. All these difficulties can be avoided if you hem your jeans by hand using a special technique.

You will need

  • Tailor's chalk or thin piece of soap, sharp scissors, needle, strong thread, steam iron.

Instructions

A button cuff will help increase the length of children's trousers. Cut out the cuff to the required length, but do not sew it to the legs, but decorate the edges using loops and buttons.

If necessary to lengthen jeans only 2-3 cm, then you can unscrew the hem at the bottom of the trouser leg. Cover the edges with braid or simply trim them with a double decorative line. The only drawback of this method is the stripes from the previous hem. But you can get out of this situation by sewing a piece of bright ribbon to the hem.

Not all women can boast that they naturally have long, slender legs. And they try to visually make them longer by wearing breathtaking stiletto heels, on which they can take only a few steps. It is not at all necessary to torture your feet with uncomfortable shoes, because the height of the heel alone will not make your feet appear longer.

Instructions

Surely, all the girls were tortured in childhood by their parents with lectures that you need to keep your back straight and not hunch over. And it’s not in vain that in order to move beautifully, models spend long hours training. When walking in heels of any height, straighten your shoulders and pull in your stomach, lift your head, and you will immediately look slimmer and taller.

Heels make your legs look slimmer. The most comfortable heel height is seven centimeters. Girls with full calves should not wear shoes with thin stiletto heels; their legs will appear even more massive. It is better to choose boots without rivets, lacing or appliqués. The slender silhouette of the classic cut of the boots is perfect for your purposes. Choose medium-length boots, maybe plain ones bright colors. Long pointed toes of shoes, although they visually lengthen leg, short girls can do a disservice - the foot will look unnaturally narrow and long.

Skinny jeans: what are they?

The choice of jeans depends on your body type. A neutral option is straight models, tapered along the entire length. For flawless legs, fit tight skinny jeans or denim jeans with added elastane. They hug your legs and highlight their shape.

Long-legged girls can afford cropped jeans that do not cover the ankle bone, or culottes. For those who want to visually increase their height, it is better to prefer elongated models. Unlike regular jeans, skinny jeans do not need to be hemmed, even if they are too long. Don't tuck them in or pull them up over high heels. The trouser legs should lie loosely, gathering slightly at the instep of the foot.

The classic option is dark blue or light blue jeans. But today black, gray or colored options are also popular. Tight models that are too light will add a couple of kilograms to you, but dark ones will make you look slimmer and visually elongate your figure.

We create fashionable ensembles

It is better to pair skinny jeans with a voluminous top - this will balance the proportions of the figure. Wear them with oversized knit sweaters, men's-style straight jackets, long vests and cardigans. This ensemble will perfectly hide excess volume around the waist, especially if your trousers are low-rise.

If you want to accentuate your figure, wear your jacket or cardigan unbuttoned with a fitted top underneath. Will complement the ensemble long scarf, casually tied around the neck, or a bright scarf.

These jeans go well with clothes in a classic, sporty or ethnic style. You should not combine them with overly romantic blouses decorated with embroidery, lace or frills - such a set looks old-fashioned. But skinny jeans can be worn with a dress with a straight or flared silhouette. This ensemble looks informal and is more suitable for young girls.

Selecting stylish additions

In the cold season, pair your jeans with oxfords with flat soles, wedges or high thick heels. The longer your legs, the lower your heel should be. You can wear skinnies with high boots, but such an ensemble visually shortens your legs.
In summer, combine jeans with light sneakers, ballet flats or sandals. To lengthen your legs, choose shoes that are the same color or darker. You should not wear classic pumps, patent leather shoes, gladiator sandals or beach flip-flops with jeans.

When choosing a bag, give preference to voluminous models. With jeans you can wear large leather or fabric bags, wicker bags, backpacks or massive clutches. Exaggeratedly vintage or romantic reticules will not work. But bright, funny models with unusual prints, as well as toy bags in the shape of animals, buses, fruits and other figures, will look very appropriate. Don't match your bag to the color of your clothes - let it be the brightest spot in your ensemble.

Tip 6: How to sew jeans for a child? Rules and subtleties

From high-quality fabric, you can sew new jeans for your child, which, when all the necessary operations are performed, will be of the same quality as store-bought ones. For the same purpose, you can use durable jeans in large sizes that are not worn by the owners.

You will need a pattern of jeans for children that matches their height and size, but if you don’t have one, you can use as a sample any pants that fit the child well, including pajama pants. It will be difficult to do such work by hand and will take a lot of time, so a sewing machine is also required for sewing. Scissors, thread, needles, chalk or pencil and an elastic band or cord for your belt will come in handy. Children's models do not fit very well and are uncomfortable to put on if they have buttons and zippers; elastic greatly simplifies this issue.

The remnants of fabric that were formed when cutting out parts can be useful for decoration or, if necessary, to apply a patch, and it is better to save them.

Before cutting, the fabric is folded in half and pinned. This simplifies the cutting process, since all the details of the jeans are paired. The pattern is placed on the fabric and traced with a pencil, leaving seam allowances of 2-3 cm. It makes sense to leave a little more fabric at the bottom to unravel it in case of a sharp growth spurt in the child. The blanks are cut out, unfolded and folded together with the right sides facing inward. All seams are made twice for greater strength; first, the inner seams of the trouser legs and the seam connecting both legs are sewn down.

When the side seams are sewn, all sections should be processed using an overlocker or a zigzag stitch so that the fabric does not fray during wear.

Jeans are turned inside out front side and sew on a belt, which can be made of the same denim fabric, or be knitted or any other material. In the belt, which is empty inside, you need to leave a hole through which a cord or elastic band will be threaded. Along the way, children's jeans can be decorated with bright buttons, snaps, rivets or appliqués. The bottom of the pants is hemmed last; it is recommended to make this stitch with a zigzag so that it can be easily unraveled and lengthen the pants. High-quality jeans will last for many years, and during this time the child’s height can increase significantly, but you can’t know about this in advance - all children grow and develop differently.

To sew small size children's jeans, it is not necessary to purchase fabric. They can be successfully cut from adult size jeans, provided that the fabric is not very worn. To prepare for work, jeans should be washed well and then cut or unstitched at all seams. The parts are carefully smoothed out; obviously unusable areas can be immediately removed with scissors. If the pants have patch or welt pockets and other decorative elements, you can arrange the patterns in such a way that they become a decoration for children's jeans. If the pockets are torn or dirty, it is better to remove them from the fabric. When pockets are ripped out, the denim underneath is usually much darker as it has been exposed to less friction and less sunlight. Sometimes these sharp color transitions on new pants are inappropriate, then you can sew new ones in place of the old pockets or cover these places with appliqué, embroidery, or a pattern.

Denim trousers are an essential item in any person's wardrobe. Indeed, at least one pair of jeans can be found in the arsenal of a one-year-old toddler and a gray-haired elderly person. The popularity of this clothing can be very easily explained - thick cotton pants are comfortable, practical, attractive and durable. There are many options for cutting and sewing jeans; men often prefer classic pants with trouser legs, ladies prefer skinny jeggings.

With all their diversity, they all have one common feature- Manufacturers make trousers with very long legs. This is done in order to make the clothes universal, suitable for a person of any height. But what is very good for those with legs and ears, is a problem for people of average or short stature. They have to cut off extra centimeters. It often happens that the master in the atelier or the owner himself overdid it and you have to think about how to lengthen the jeans.

Some are shorter, some are longer...

Trouble with short trousers can occur not only in the case of unsuccessful sewing experiments. tends to shrink, the owner of the pants can simply grow up, it happens that jeans that fit perfectly in the waist and are practically unworn lose their appearance only in the lower part, then you have to cut off the disheveled legs and think about how to lengthen the jeans to give them a second life .

When clients bring trousers to a professional studio, the master must carefully try them on; it is important to initially take with you the shoes in which you plan to wear the hemmed jeans. These precautions will help you avoid troubles with “shot” pants and wasted money.

When picking up the finished work from the seamstress, many clients often wonder why they are given small pieces of cut-off pants along with the finished trousers. The fact is that sewing workshop employees more often than others have to face the question of how to lengthen jeans. They wisely give the cut pieces to their clients so that, if necessary, they come back for subsequent trouser repairs with the finished material. A seamstress can make cuffs, a lapel out of this nondescript piece, or simply sharpen it to the trouser legs. Such repairs will not take much time and will not require careful selection of fabric, because it is not always possible to select the material of the desired thickness, color or texture.

The easiest way

So, if the problem with short pants is obvious, it needs to be solved. The most basic way is to try using an existing resource. What does it mean? To begin with, you can rip open the existing hem and try to solve the existing problem with little effort. Perhaps the seam hides the missing 1.5-2 cm in the length of the trouser legs. This option is good for new jeans, because worn and washed pants wear out quite quickly at the bottom and after their bottom edge is ripped open, all the fraying is maximally manifested.

How to lengthen jeans as easily as possible? In cases where simple steaming followed by minimal hemming of the cut is not enough (or this option is impossible due to the severe wear of the pants), you can use another option. To do this, you need to add the missing length to them, choosing the most similar fabric. Such a cuff can be taken from other trousers by cutting off their length, in which case you don’t even have to work hard, the main thing is to sew the cuts together symmetrically. You can use a piece of fabric, but experts recommend cutting the pattern on the bias, since jeans are cut in production this way.

It's easier with girls

The question of how to lengthen children's jeans arises before parents with enviable regularity. It is natural for a child to grow, and often this happens very abruptly and unexpectedly for mom and dad. In addition to the pleasant feeling that the baby has become a little more mature, the growth process also leaves an unpleasant aftertaste in the soul, and after such physiological processes there is nothing left in the wallet at all. The matter, however, is quite fixable. Lengthening jeans for girls is as easy as shelling pears; fortunately, there are simply an incredible amount of ideas for this. Here are just a few of the most popular and inexpensive:

  • the trouser legs can be ripped open and a fringe can be made from the frayed seam;
  • a cute frill made of colorful fabric or a lace ruffle sewn to the legs will make the trousers exclusive and not short;
  • You can lengthen the pants not only along the bottom edge - an insert of lace or fabric placed in the knee area looks very impressive and aesthetically pleasing, in addition, thanks to this trick it is very easy to get rid of scuffs or holes formed as a result of falls or crawling.

The last option is a godsend not only for mothers of girls; fixing boys’ jeans in this way is also not difficult.

Accelerator boys and conservative men

Boys have to deal with the problem of short and damaged pants many times more often than their peers. In addition, the stronger sex is picky and intractable when it comes to alterations to their wardrobe. Conservative by nature, men may disapprove of micro-repairs of their favorite jeans, or even stop wearing them altogether.

The best way to lengthen jeans for a boy is to make a cuff for them from cotton fabric. Traditionally, it can be a checkered or striped pattern, polka dots or just a plain insert - all these options will look relevant and presentable.

Recently, trousers with elastic at the bottom have gained great popularity. If you like this model, then by sewing an elastic cuff made of knitwear or denim to your pants, you can kill two birds with one stone - make trendy jeans that will have the required length.
