Why you can’t swim in Pakhra and Petritsa
According to the results of laboratory studies and measurements of the Podolsk branch of the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Moscow Region, the water of the Pakhra and Petritsa rivers, as well as the Yuzhny reservoir, does not meet sanitary standards and rules. Therefore, it is not recommended to use these water bodies for Epiphany bathing.
Fonts that are safe for ritual bathing on Epiphany are open throughout the Moscow region. The regional Ministry of Emergency Situations clarifies that on the night of January 18-19, order and security will be ensured by more than 3 thousand department employees and 856 pieces of equipment. Rescuers, doctors and police officers will be on duty in all places.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations calls on swimmers to follow simple rules:
In order to avoid accidents, it is necessary to perform ritual bathing only in places specially equipped for this, where specialized units are on duty;
It is prohibited to go out on the ice in large groups of people, this may damage the integrity of the ice;
It is necessary to take turns, keeping a distance of at least 3-5 meters from each other;
It is necessary to be mutually polite: do not push each other near places where ice is cut for collecting water and swimming;
Access of small children unaccompanied by adults to the ice hole and mine is prohibited;
It is prohibited to avoid health problems (increased blood pressure, heart attack, etc.), swimming while intoxicated;
Swimming is prohibited for persons with serious health problems (bronchial asthma, diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract, cardiovascular diseases).

Orthodox believers on January 19 celebrate one of the main church holidays- Epiphany. On this day, a great consecration of water takes place, and many Christians, according to tradition, plunge into an ice hole or a font equipped at the temple. It is believed that this can save a person from any disease, even serious ones. Three official baths will be organized in Balashikha. A columnist for RIAMO in Balashikha found out where city residents can swim for Epiphany.
Feast of the Epiphany
Epiphany ends the Christmas holidays, which lasted from January 7 to January 19. Orthodox Christians begin to celebrate the holiday the night before. The celebrations are associated with the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River, which was performed by John the Baptist. According to legend, during Jesus’ baptism the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove, and a voice was also heard: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” According to Christian teaching, it was on this day that God appeared in three persons: God the Father in voice, the Son of God in the flesh, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, which is why the feast of Epiphany is often called the Epiphany.
Holiday customs
The celebration begins on January 18, it is customary to fast throughout the day, only in the evening is it possible to taste Lenten dishes. On the morning of January 19, believers go to church to bless the water. This can also be done near any body of water. Within 24 hours, the water acquires special healing properties that last throughout the year.
One of the oldest traditions of Epiphany is swimming in an ice hole. A cross-shaped wormwood - Jordan - is cut out in advance in the ice. As night falls, ministers bless the water in the wormwood, and believers perform ablution. After such a bath, people believe that they will not get sick for a year.
Where to plunge into an ice hole in Balashikha

In Balashikha, three areas have been identified for swimming: the right bank of the Pekhorka River (the area adjacent to the water rescue station No. 2 of the Balashikha territorial administration of the State Institution of Municipal Institution "Mosoblpozhspas"), a lake in the Zarya microdistrict and a font on the territory of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of New Miletus.
Places for Epiphany bathing will be equipped with warm tents for changing clothes, and the sale of hot soft drinks and baked goods will be organized. Rescuers, law enforcement officers, and medical personnel will be on duty near the ice holes.

Residents of Balashikha can swim at Epiphany in other cities located nearby. For example, in the Lyubertsy region three Jordans will be equipped: in the Natashinsky Ponds park in Lyubertsy, on Malakhovskoye Lake and the Bolshoi Korenevsky quarry in Kraskovo.
Ice holes for swimming will be prepared in Shchelkovo. One of the sites will be built on the Klyazma River next to the city park of culture and recreation.
In the Noginsk region, you can plunge into an ice hole at Lake Biserovo and the Kupavinka River in Staraya Kupavna, as well as at Kamensky Pond in Elektrougli. In Noginsk itself, fonts will be installed in the Assumption Church, the Church of the Holy Blessed Matrona and the Epiphany Cathedral.
