How to reverse a car. Driving in reverse: main points, rules and subtleties

27.12.2017 Auto/Moto

After obtaining a license and purchasing a car, all that remains is to learn how to drive correctly. Let’s imagine that at a driving school you came across a less than conscientious instructor who did not teach you all the intricacies of driving a car, and there is also no person nearby who could fill the gaps in your knowledge.

When learning to reverse park, ensure safety for other motorists and pedestrians

The first thing you will need to do is find a suitable place for training. Ideally, this should be a special race track, where there are markings on the asphalt that simulate a parking lot, and there is also a certain number of chips available that will act as dimensions for neighboring cars, between which we will, in fact, park.

If it is not possible to go to such a landfill, any parking lot will do - for example, it could be a parking lot near large supermarkets. As a rule, such parking lots have a significant area, so it is quite possible to choose a free area for practicing maneuvers. Instead of chips, you can use anything you like - old ones car tires, bottles, bags with stones, etc. The main thing to consider when training in such a parking lot is to ensure safety for other motorists and pedestrians. A far corner area, where there are no cars and no people walking, is best.

Video tutorial: Parking in reverse

As you probably already know, there are two types of reverse parking: the first, when cars are parked in parking spaces located perpendicular to the driveway (we can see this in store parking lots, as well as paid parking lots), and the second option, in which the cars are parked in a row, that is, the headlights of one car look into the taillights of the next. This is how cars are parked along curbs on the streets.

Be sure to remember what kind of drive your car has, because the turning radius of the car depends on this. Rear-wheel drive vehicles have a minimum turning radius, while all-wheel drive vehicles have a maximum turning radius. Front-wheel drive vehicles are an intermediate option.

Also, it is extremely important not to forget that objects reflected in the rear-view mirrors may appear further away than they actually are (often, in foreign cars such a warning is written directly on the side mirrors themselves).

You can learn how to park in reverse at a special race track, where there are markings on the asphalt that simulate a parking lot.

Try to imagine the external dimensions of your car - even if you don’t feel them fully yet. Always estimate the distance, mentally taking a margin of thirty percent - this will avoid unpleasant collisions and scratches.

Before moving on to rear parking exercises, you should still say a few words about “straight” parking. Of course, it is much easier to do it than in reverse, but there are some nuances here too. Firstly, if you don’t want to damage your rims, the first time before a maneuver is to lower the right side mirror down to see the edge in it. With experience, the need for this will disappear, however, to get used to the side dimensions, this will probably be the best way.

And one more piece of advice - never stand close to the front (or rear) car, leave at least half a meter, and preferably a meter.

Instead of chips for learning to park in reverse, you can use anything - old car tires, bottles, bags of stones, etc.

The same goes for the side doors of neighboring cars - not only can your neighbor, trying to squeeze into the driver’s seat, damage the paint of your car (or even leave a dent), you can even block his entry into the cabin. These simple rules road etiquette will save you from many conflicts in parking lots, and, accordingly, from wasted nerve cells.

Reverse parallel parking for beginners

This type of parking, often called every blonde's nightmare, is indeed the most technically difficult. Here you need to take into account everything - the position of the edge, the distance between parked cars, the length of your vehicle. Let's start with the distance between parked cars. If you are a beginner, it should be at least twice the length of your car. In the future, it is also worth choosing parking spaces that are exactly this size. If the distance is less, there is always a risk of hitting the rear car (especially if your car has limited visibility). Since now you are just training, place the chips (or what replaces them) at the specified distance.

The two front chips will symbolize the taillights of the car standing in front, and the rear chips, respectively, the headlights of the car at the back. For the convenience of explanation, we will assume that you are immediately parking, so to speak, in real conditions, so we no longer mention the word “chips”.

  1. To begin parking maneuvers, position your car so that it is parallel to the car that will be parked in front after parking. Your rear wheels should be clearly opposite the rear wheels of this car, and your front wheels, respectively, opposite the front ones. The distance between cars should be from half to one meter.
  2. Turn the steering wheel all the way right side and carefully, looking in the left mirror, we begin to reverse.
  3. We move until in the left rearview mirror we see the right headlight of the car standing behind us.
  4. As soon as we saw this headlight, we stop driving and put the steering wheel in the middle position, that is, so that the wheels look straight ahead.
  5. We start moving again and continue it until the extreme front point of the body of your car is on the same level with the conditional line running along the rear bumper of the front car. As soon as this happens, we stop the movement again.
  6. Now you need to turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.
  7. We start the movement again and carry it out until the car is in a position parallel to the edge. Here it is extremely important to monitor the rear dimensions of your car - so as not to inadvertently back up too much and not hit the car standing behind you.
  8. That's it, now all we have to do is position our car in such a way that it is clearly in the middle between two standing cars. To do this, simply return the steering wheel to the middle position and move it slightly forward (or backward), keeping the steering wheel still straight.

We get out of the car and evaluate the results of our efforts. Ideally, the distance between the front bumpers and rear car and the bumpers of your car should be equal.

Don't be discouraged if you don't manage to park in reverse the first time - practice until you are satisfied with the result

Don't be discouraged if you didn't manage to do it the first time - do the exercise until you are satisfied with the result, and only after that try to park between real cars, not chips.

Also, do not forget the following - if you park on an uphill or downhill slope, leave the car with the wheels facing the curb.

This ensures that, even in the event of a sudden failure brake system, the car will not roll down the slope, but will rest its wheels against this very curb.

How to learn how to park in reverse between cars

Now let's talk about the second type of parking, called perpendicular. By the way, parking a car in a garage, in most cases, is exactly this type (with the only difference being that the role of the neighboring cars between which you park is played by the open garage doors).

So, you are moving along the parking lot and notice an empty space:

  1. Pass this place and stop so that the left headlight of the next car is opposite the front wheel of your car.
  2. Turn the steering wheel to the left and start moving forward.
  3. 3. Continue driving until your car is at approximately 45 degrees in relation to the car whose headlight we just stopped in front of. It's worth noting that this leftmost headlight should now be visible in your right side rearview mirror.
  4. We align the steering wheel (the wheels become straight) and start moving backwards.
  5. We continue driving until our rear right headlight is in line with the left front headlight of the same car.
  6. Now you need to turn the steering wheel to the right and complete the maneuver. The criterion that it is finished will be the position of your car, parallel to the cars on the left and right. You can also navigate by the side mirrors - they should be approximately in line with the mirrors of your “neighbors”.
  7. If the distance to the left or right car is significantly less than to the opposite one, you need to drive out a little and carefully drive back, leveling your position.

Never try to park in too narrow spaces - this can damage your car.

Never try to park in too narrow spaces - in such cases it is very big chance that you will hit a neighboring car, or if you do manage to park, you will not be able to open your door normally or will press against your neighbor’s door (as mentioned above).

Every person who owns a car is required to master proper parking techniques. Always try to adequately assess your capabilities - if you have even the slightest doubt that you will be able to park easily and safely, look for another place. An extra 5 minutes of time can save you money that would have to be spent on repairing your body, or the body of a neighboring car.

Be sure to carefully inspect the parking area - high curbs, flower beds and bollards are the most common cause of unpleasant dents and scratches even for experienced drivers, let alone those new to this business.

A few more words about systems that make parking easier. Firstly, this is, of course, parking sensors. It will help you estimate the distance to neighboring cars, which is very helpful in case of poor visibility from the car. However, you should not completely rely on this system.

There are very frequent cases when the parking sensors simply did not work on time, which caused minor accidents. Second - cameras. The reliability of these systems is higher than that of parking sensors, since you personally see all the obstacles. Today, there are car models with cameras that provide a 360-degree view - this is one of the most reliable assistants, allowing you to control the situation from all sides of the car during a maneuver.

Well, the most exotic option is parkpilot, that is, an automatic parking system. So far, it is too little widespread to talk about its real benefits, but owners of such machines note its high reliability.

It is not uncommon for motorists to encounter the problem of driving in reverse. To learn how to drive in reverse, you need not only to look behind you, but also to roughly predict which direction the car will go with a certain turn of the steering wheel.

Many people try to drive in reverse, focusing only on the rearview mirrors. But this option is not always acceptable, because you may not notice any object located in the “dead zone”. And few people can focus only on the mirrors when moving backwards.

To learn how to drive in reverse, you need to pay attention to your seating position. You can see everything that is behind you only by turning the body to the right. In this case, you need to grab the passenger's headrest with your right hand, while your eyes should look through the rear window. Only in this way will you be able to consider everything that is happening behind you in order to correctly assess the possibility of driving in reverse.

With this driver's position, there should be only left hand, located at 12 o'clock, if you compare the steering wheel with a clock. It will be important to consider how you grip the passenger’s headrest - you should be as comfortable as possible, for this it is better to grip it at the top.

You shouldn’t be afraid to turn the steering wheel - you just need to remember: where I want to turn, that’s where I turn. Everything is the same as when moving forward, but the trunk and hood have changed places.

How to learn to drive in reverse if you have a manual transmission?

And this is not a problem - just never completely release the clutch, you need to always be ready to release the clutch and move your foot to the brake in case the car suddenly stops.

Never forget that the car is moving in an arced line; with such a movement, you can easily hit neighboring cars. Therefore, you need to constantly monitor the behavior of the front of the car, not forgetting about the rear. Your gaze should be directed in the direction in which you are eating.

Before any trip, do not forget to adjust your mirrors, even if you are looking through the rear window. You need to adjust the mirrors to your normal body position and direct gaze. The rear of the car should only take up ¼ of the mirror. The horizon should be divided in half by mirrors.

Never rush when driving, especially when driving backwards. Keep an eye on your front fenders, look in your mirrors, or turn your head back while hugging the passenger seat.

If you are still undergoing training, then it is worth watching video lessons that teach you how to drive backwards. Then you need to pass the 2014 traffic rules tests at home. And you can go to the traffic police exam with complete confidence in your abilities.

But as soon as you get your license, don’t forget to practice driving in reverse. For greater clarity, you can even measure the trajectory of your intended turn on the ground and compare it with the completed one.

Reversing

Precise reversing is one of those elements of driving skill, without which it is impossible to imagine full control of a car. Let's look at how to learn how to drive in reverse so that you can avoid obstacles and park without any problems.

Basics

You will not be able to develop a skill without training, so you will need:

  • a small area where you can ride without fear of harming other road users. Few stationary objects will not be an obstacle, since you will need landmarks for maneuvering;
  • a car that is as close as possible to the dimensions and controls of your vehicle, if the training will not take place in your car. This point is especially important, because having learned to drive a small car with an automatic transmission, at the most crucial moment, for example, when passing a mechanics exam, you may become confused.

A sense of size is perhaps the most useful skill when reversing. With experience comes the ability to quickly adapt to any car, but for a novice driver, a sense of size is real problem. You can overcome this difficulty by using correct settings rear view mirrors. We considered , at which blind spots are minimized as much as possible. When reversing, it is first of all important for us to assess the distance from the vehicle's overall points to obstacles. Therefore, we recommend moving the side mirrors to the parking position:

  • in the near part of the mirror element the most protruding part of the rear part of the body and the wheel arch are displayed;
  • only 40% of the display is occupied by the horizon, because it is easier to park close to the curbs, and it is also much easier to notice small objects near the car.

Simple rules

Features to consider when maneuvering:

Subtleties of control

Please note that when moving backwards, the direction is set by the rear wheels in the direction of travel. This makes the car more maneuverable, as the body's response to the steering wheel will be sharper. That is why loaders are equipped with a rear swivel axle. You need to move at low speed. Avoid sudden steering movements. Especially on slippery surfaces, since regardless of the type of drive axle, active taxiing will provoke a skid.

Due to the way our brain perceives information, look where your car should be. If, while moving in reverse, you focus your attention on an obstacle that needs to be avoided, then there is a high probability that your brain, against your will, will force your hands to direct the car precisely towards the obstacle.

Do not correct the trajectory by increasing speed. At the initial stage, it is best to drive at a constant, low speed, at which you can control the angle of rotation and the situation around the car. On a manual transmission, that is, a car with a manual transmission, at low speeds the pace can be adjusted with the clutch pedal. On a car with a working automatic transmission, to drive at low speed, just release the brake pedal. On a manual transmission, you can partially depress the clutch pedal. At the same time, it is important not to increase the engine speed until the car begins to stall. Otherwise, if you drive for a long time, you can burn the clutch, which will result in quite costly repairs in the future. Therefore, in order to learn how to properly drive in reverse on a manual, you definitely need basic reflexes for working with the pedals.

Skill formation

Training should begin with developing a sense of the dimensions of the car. To do this, you must reverse toward the obstacle gradually, periodically leaving the passenger compartment and visually monitoring the distance. It is most convenient to use several tires as a barrier, the impact of which will not cause damage to the car’s paintwork. Once you are as close as possible to the obstacle, match the reflection in the rearview mirror with the distance between the rear bumper and the object. The more you practice, the better you will be in the future at relating the reflection in your rearview mirrors to the actual distance to an object.

Oddly enough, to learn how to drive in reverse correctly, you need only a little theory, but a lot of practice. Create snakes and corridors of all possible shapes from plastic cones. At the same time, as your skill level increases, reduce the distance between the cones. In the same way, you can learn how to parallel park and put it in a garage. We recommend starting your training by watching videos in which experienced drivers will show you the basic techniques and features of reversing.

Electronic assistants

You can solve the parking problem using a camera installed in the rear of the car. There are universal cameras on sale that can be connected to a 2-DIN radio. You can also purchase a central rearview mirror, which will display the camera image when driving backwards. A more budget option is parking sensors. The cost of a universal kit cannot be called high, moreover.

One of the main problems of a novice motorist is learning how to drive backwards correctly. The ability to maneuver in narrow openings using reverse gear requires some experience from the driver. It often happens that after receiving driver's license, the motorist lacks the skills to park the car in a place with limited space. Quite often, the cause of accidents is a lack of practical skills and theoretical knowledge in driving. Below we will look at general concepts regarding driving backwards, and also study this issue step by step.

Setting up mirrors

Driving backwards in a car is especially dangerous. It is due to the fact that the rear view is limited compared to the front, that is, the driver does not see as well what is happening behind his car as in the front. Therefore, in order to avoid such ridiculous accidents, you should first adjust your rear view mirrors correctly. The setting is as follows: the view of the side mirror should reflect the rear wing of your car by about 15%, the rest of the visibility of the side mirrors is occupied by what is happening behind the car.

Sometimes you have to tilt the mirror a little if you need to park in a place where there is a curb nearby. In all other cases, the side mirrors should show what is happening behind you. The rear view mirror, which is located inside the passenger compartment, should display the entire outline of the rear window, and the driver's head is partially visible in the lower left corner of the mirror. Often women adjust the mirror in such a way that their face is visible; such “narcissism” can lead to undesirable consequences on the road.

We use the rear window for driving

An inexperienced driver should not rely entirely on the rearview mirrors when reversing. Recently, it has become popular to install a curved mirror in the car interior; it is specially designed so that an experienced driver can more easily assess the situation behind. But such a mirror can play a cruel joke on a beginner, since the image in such a device is slightly distorted.

In such a mirror it is difficult to recognize how close an obstacle is. In this situation, it is best to act like most car enthusiasts. When backing up, the driver should turn over his right shoulder and look out the rear window. For convenience, you can hold on to the next seat and thus move to a given point. This method is the easiest way to control driving backwards.

Learning to control driving in reverse

Let's begin to study the technique of maneuvering using the steering wheel, and also consider how to reverse correctly. Theoretically, driving a car is not at all difficult; it seems that even a child can easily cope with this task. But when faced with driving in practice, self-confidence can decrease significantly.

You need to start mastering driving in reverse by driving slowly. The slower you back up, the less likely you are to hit something or someone. Also, do not forget that a beginner should not release the clutch completely. To start, just let it go a little. Use the gas pedal smoothly. It happens that when passing a license, a person is taught to move backwards, using only the clutch, without using the gas pedal. This is extremely wrong, because in everyday driving you often have to drive uphill, and not just drive on a flat road; in such a situation, at idle speed the internal combustion engine cannot cope with such a task, because the car will simply stall if you do not use the gas pedal.

As for control, it is better for an inexperienced driver to use the rear window instead of a mirror inside the cabin. This makes it much easier to control.

It must be remembered that no matter what brand the car is and no matter what its characteristics, its maneuverability in reverse will always be higher than in the front. A car in reverse makes turns much sharper. It is better to place your hands at the top of the steering wheel, this will allow you to maneuver more efficiently.

Important! You need to know exactly in what position the steering wheel will direct the car straight ahead and not to the sides.

How to park in reverse

You need to learn to park a car under the supervision of an instructor. This material is of particular value if you have already received driver's license, but don’t yet have any special driving skills. First of all, you need to pay attention to the place where you are going to park the car. A potential parking spot should have enough space for your car, and there should also be a certain gap between the car and the objects that will be located nearby. In the future, you will have to drive the car into fairly narrow openings, but during training you need to select parking spots with enough space.

Many novice motorists mistakenly believe that parking a car in reverse is very difficult due to many nuances and therefore, it is more reasonable to park in the front. But when a beginner in real life tries to park the car several times using forward gear, he quickly realizes how much he was mistaken.

What's wrong with parking a car in front when using it all the time? As mentioned above, the rear wheels of a car react much sharper when turning the steering wheel than the front wheels. Based on this, it turns out that parking using reverse gear is much more maneuverable than usual.

Let's learn parking step by step

To properly park your car, use the step-by-step instructions:

  • find a parking space with sufficient space;
  • We stand close to the parking space so that you are separated by 20 centimeters from the car next to you;
  • we drive up to the car that is in front, then we align the position of our car so that the bumpers are on the same level with the car standing next to it;
  • we go into reverse. Hold the steering wheel. We need to carefully monitor the angle at which we will enter the turn. We need to back up until the rear wheel of our car is level with the bumper of the car parked in front;

A lot of problems for motorists are associated with reversing. This is primarily due to the fact that you need to not only look behind you, but also try to guess which direction your car will go when you turn the steering wheel, and also turn the steering wheel to the desired angle.
There is one very good advice: Where you want to point the rear trunk of your car, turn the steering wheel in that direction.

Reversing skills are very important, since in a real city you will be forced to park in the narrowest parking pockets.

Most often, drivers try to drive in reverse, guided by the rear view mirrors. Unfortunately, this driving technique has a huge drawback: it is possible that any object in the mirrors of your car will simply be invisible to you.

Most The right way steering in reverse is also the most inconvenient, but first things first. Let's start with the correct driving position. You can appreciate the picture from behind 100% only when your body is turned to the right, your right hand will wrap around the headrest of the passenger seat on the left, and your eyes will look out the rear window. It is in this position, when you look out the rear window, that you most fully appreciate all the details of reversing. When driving this way, only your left hand is used for steering, located at 12 o'clock, if you compare the steering wheel with a watch dial. In turn, the driver's right hand clasps the left passenger seat at the highest point for ease of driving.

Next helpful advice: Don’t think about where you need to turn the steering wheel, but simply imagine where I want to point the rear bumper, and I’ll turn it there. Simply put, everything is the same as moving forward, only the hood and trunk have swapped their places.

Video

Never rush. For example, if you have, then never release the clutch pedal completely. Always be prepared to move your foot from the accelerator to the brake to stop in time.

Also, do not forget that the hood of your car moves in an arc, which can create a certain danger of hitting neighboring cars on the right and left. Always keep the front of your car moving to the side, but don't forget to quickly look back. Remember a simple rule: to avoid ridiculous accidents, your gaze should be directed exactly in the direction where the car is going.

Be sure to consider simple popular rule: I don’t see - I’m not going.

So, when you have learned to drive a car in reverse and have passed the online traffic rules 2014 with flying colors, you can now safely take the exam at the traffic police and get a license. And after receiving your license, do not forget to consolidate your knowledge and take additional tests on the Internet.
