A game where you can stop time. Games with the ability to distort time

21.06.2019 Career and Work

Today our Top 5 will be dedicated to “Time Travel” - this is probably one of the most popular topics for any creativity - be it cinema, books, and, of course, games. Every author likes to fantasize about how to go back in time and fix everything - for example, kill Hitler or save dinosaurs, or, on the contrary, go into the future and personally see everything that awaits us in 1000 years.

And in this “five” we’ll talk about games where you can run around Ancient Rome with a cannon, meet yourself from the past, and generally manage time as you please.

Back to the Future: The Game

5th place. In fifth place we have probably one of the most famous works on the topic of time travel - “Back to the Future”, or rather its game adaptation - Back to the Future: The Game from Telltale Games. Over the course of five episodes, the player in the role of Marty McFly will have to deal with the most common problems for Back to the Future: set the young doc on the right path, as always, engage in pimping in order to be born at all, and, at worst, save the entire city of Hill Valley.

It would also be nice not to meet with yourself, otherwise the space-time continuum may be disrupted. There is very little traditional QTE in the game, as we are used to seeing in modern movie games. Although there are dynamic episodes here, you still need to think about them, find some objects and use them correctly.

And given that in most cases the player has access to several large locations at once, sometimes this is almost the entire city of Hill Valley. Back to the Future is truly a quest, an excellent fusion of graphics, plot and puzzles. Fifth place.

4th place. In fourth place is the shooter TimeShift from the St. Petersburg company Saber Interactive, the authors of such good games as Will Rock and Inversion. The name of the game, TimeShift, seems to hint at the fact that we are in for a close interaction with time, and this is true; the entire gameplay is based on managing time with the help of a very fashionable and technologically advanced super-suit. In general, this one is the same fashionable suit and became the main problem: one not very cultured guy seized his clothes, moved into the past and set up a small dictatorship there with the help of all sorts of futuristic gadgets.

And now the player receives another equally fashionable temporary suit and goes back in time to return everything to normal. This is such a typical plot, somewhat reminiscent of that part of Back to the Future, where Biff became the richest and oppressed everyone.

The gameplay also makes the most of all the temporary features of the suit - like the usual Slow Moution for precise hits, or let's say stopping time, when all the enemies around freeze and you can do whatever you want with them, and, of course, inversion - that is, you can turn turning back time, when all events happen in the opposite direction. A very decent, interesting and cheerful shooter with temporary features. Fourth place.

3rd place. In third place we also have Darkest of Days from the studio 8Monkey Labs (8 Monkeys) - this is their only game that they released, but they did it quite well. I'm very attracted to the absurd situations that occur in this project - for example, one of the missions in which you run around Ancient Rome with a machine gun - well, it's a lot of fun, and there are just a lot of such fun things in Darkest of Days.

As a rule, the very first mission in the game is always remembered by every gamer, it’s that feeling when you run without knowing anything, shoot back and forth, the Indians with their feathers are galloping on horses, and then boom... a fucking astronaut appears right out of thin air or something like that - this is a very cool plot point. Then the player finds himself in the KronoteK organization, which, using “time travel” technologies, travels through different eras and saves history from the interference of various villains, who, of course, play dirty tricks and dream of ruining the whole world.

The gameplay itself in the game is quite standard, and to some extent even boring - it does not stand out in anything, a simple first-person shooter - we run and shoot. The most interesting thing in Darkest of Days is, of course, the plot and location design - open spaces, epic battles in different time periods. A game that never became a masterpiece, but can definitely give a unique experience to the player and will remain in the memory. Third place.

2nd place. Second place and again we have FPS - and this game Singularity, from the real mastodons of the genre - from the Raven Software studio. This was their last independent project, one might even say farewell, and again it was a great success, more than a great game. It’s a pity for this studio that it couldn’t stay afloat and is now busy making multiplayer maps for the Call of Duty series, but still thanks to them for all the great games and for Singularity - this is an excellent shooter in the atmosphere of the Soviet Union.

The main character, an American, together with a detachment of fighters, goes to the island of Katorga-12, recently a terrible electromagnetic wave arose from there, which destroyed an entire US satellite. There, the gamer, as you probably already guessed, will encounter all sorts of experiments, secret research and villainous doctors in several time periods. The plot of the game and the design of the island are excellent, this is a truly excellent single player game. And, of course, one of the important features is mastering time using the MVP (mobile time converter).

With its help, you can gain the ability of telekinesis, create entire zones where time stops, and, probably, the most interesting thing is to move objects and even living beings directly in time - that is, with just one click of a button you can age or, on the contrary, rejuvenate an object, or quickly age an enemy to the level of a skeleton. This ability is by far the most interesting temporary feature we've seen in gaming, and when combined with a great story and design, Singular is a truly masterpiece game that every shooter fan should play. Second place.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

1st place. First place and the title of the coolest game where you can mock the space-time continuum goes to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. That same gorgeous game from childhood, it came out back in 2003 and was released by a great company - Ubisoft. “Prince of Persia” is great in everything, from the plot to the graphics, the game has absolutely no drawbacks, but let’s take it in order.

Let's start with the plot in which our traditionally nameless prince finds the Dagger of Time and with its help frees the Sands of Time, which turn his entire army and his father into sand zombies, and now again he will have to “saw” to the sands in order to return everything to its place.

And here a pleasant bonus comes into play - Princess Farah - even then Ubisoft realized that the main character, and the gamer himself, definitely needs a girlfriend who will help him throughout the game, and just brighten up the gray days with her curves - get it, sign for it.

But the lion's share of the game's success, of course, was ensured by the excellent gameplay: firstly, it is a gorgeous acrobatics, a platformer in which the gamer really needs to think about how to jump, where, how to get to the right place, or, on the contrary, a lot of tricky traps where the player needs show maximum reaction and dexterity.

And here the Dagger of Time will help us, with its help you can rewind time, even if the prince has already died. You can rewind time a limited number of times, but considering really high complexity traps, even a few times may not be enough to get through a particularly difficult place - but when you have already passed, you experience genuine joy.

“Prince of Persia” is remembered with great fondness, especially after all these modern games like Remember Me and similar projects, where even the place for the next jump is marked with an arrow.

Well, of course, in “Prince of Persia” there was a decent combat system, but let’s say in the next games of this very original trilogy, new interesting moments appeared, for example, chariot racing. "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is in first place - this is a truly great game.

Below I have collected games in which the plot is tied to time travel. Unfortunately, there are not as many games with this theme as we would like. If you know other games that would fit here, be sure to write about it in the comments. Thank you in advance!

Day of the Tentacle Remastered

release date: 1993, remastered - 2016

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is a popular classic adventure game, which takes place in the same mansion, but in three time periods: the present, the past and the future. The re-release features a completely redrawn image, however, the game allows you to switch between versions of the image (old and new) by pressing the F1 key. The new picture turned out to be bright and rich, while maintaining the charm of the classic cartoon style.

There have been no significant changes to the gameplay. A classic adventure awaits us with saving the world from the Purple Tentacle. The plot and riddles in the game also remained the same, but sketch illustrations were added as bonuses, which are revealed as you progress. In addition, the player can switch between two types of interface (classic and modernized).

CHRONO TRIGGER

Release date: 1995

Genre: RPG

Japanese role-playing game(jRPG), which tells the adventures of young time travelers who travel through different eras of a fictional world in order to prevent its destruction in the future. The game has a nonlinear plot, a carefully designed world and characters, pleasant music and wonderful pixel graphics, for which the project was highly praised by critics at the time of its release.

The gameplay is conventionally divided into exploring the world, dialogues, completing quests and battles. In this case, movement is carried out both on the global map and within certain locations. We control several heroes at once, and battles take place step-by-step with traditional jRPG mechanics, when each character (including opponents) in battle has a filled scale, which is spent on some action and is filled again.

Duke Nukem: Time to Kill and Zero Hour

release date: 1998

The famous Duke Nukem appears before us in the game with a third-person view and enters into battle with evil mutants seeking to capture all the babies of the Earth. The hero will have to visit different time periods, chasing aliens through Ancient Rome, Medieval Europe and even the Wild West.

Despite the third-person view, there have been no significant changes in the gameplay - we, represented by Duke, still run through confusing locations and destroy aliens in every possible way, using a wide variety of weapons. It is worth noting that here we are traveling in time, which means that landscapes, weapons, clothing and other attributes will correspond to the time period in which our main character is currently located.

Evil Dead: Hail to the King

release date: 2000

Based on the Evil Dead film trilogy, this survival horror game will take you in the role of Ash not only to places familiar from the films, but also to various time periods, including medieval Damascus in 730. It is noteworthy that the main character in the game was voiced by actor Bruce Campbell, who played this role on screen.

The gameplay is similar to most games of this genre, in particular the early parts of the Resident Evil series. We have a hero moving through locations, there is inventory and various weapons, there are many different opponents, and saving is carried out in certain places if there is a special item (a tape reel). There are also quest elements, in particular searching for objects and using them in the right place.

Original War

release date: 2001

Genre: RPG, real-time strategy

A fascinating mixture of strategy and RPG, in which the plot is in the Siberian taiga at the beginning of the 21st century chemical element, which became the basis for superfuel. The Americans, envious of such a find, decide to travel back in time and get ahead of the Russians by “borrowing” a new element from their territory. However, the plans of the Americans are not destined to come true, since the Russians from an alternative reality, the Arabs, and indeed everyone who is not too lazy, enter the game.

The project is distinguished by deep tactical gameplay, where each of your units is worth its weight in gold and the loss of even one soldier can have a detrimental effect on your further progress. At the same time, each person in the squad is pumped up, and he can be pumped up both his shooting skills and the skills of a scientist, mechanic, engineer, etc., assigning him to one profession or another.

Clock Tower 3

release date: 2003

Genre: Action, adventure, survival horror

A mystical third-person survival horror game in which a fourteen-year-old girl living in a boarding school comes to visit her mother, but when she doesn't find her, she is transported back in time to World War II London.

There are no weapons in the game, and only holy water will somehow help us in passing (and even then, the help from it will be very small). The gameplay is based on exploring locations, finding objects and solving simple puzzles. There are also big, angry bosses here that we can't do much against, so we'll have to run and hide from them. An unusual moment in the game can be called “helping ghosts” - if you find a special item in time and place it on Right place, then the ghost will not bother you, and when it disappears it will leave a reward.

TimeShift

release date: 2007

A fantastic first-person shooter in which the gameplay is based on the player's ability to control time - stop or slow it down, and even reverse it. A special suit gives us such opportunities, and without using our skills in certain places, it will be impossible to complete the game completely.

Manipulations over time consume the suit's energy, which, however, is restored quite quickly in normal mode. There will often be various puzzles throughout the levels that require you to use the suit's capabilities in order to advance to the next stage. Otherwise, the game is a fairly “strong” shooter with intelligent opponents and a large selection of different weapons.

Darkest of Days

release date: 2009

Genre: First Person Shooter

A shooter about time travel in which we will be able to visit times civil war in America, on the fields of the First World War, in a concentration camp during the Third Reich, and even in 79 AD. In addition to the main mission objectives, at the levels we will perform various intermediate goals - blow up a bridge, recapture a railroad, smoke an enemy out of a church, shoot from turrets, etc.

There are also various game “chips” here. So, for example, some opponents will be important historical figures, and killing them will deprive you of future upgrade points (yes, there is a weapon upgrade), so such people should be neutralized with special nanobots. Otherwise, the gameplay here is simple to the point of disgrace. We received a short briefing before the mission and set off to destroy the enemy and complete missions - and so on until the final credits.

STEINS;GATE

release date: 2009

An action-adventure game that tells about the adventures of the famous Spider-Man and his travels in different realities and time periods. Two heroes from different universes (2099 and Amazing) team up to help Peter Parker from a threat looming from the future.

The gameplay of the game is an action game with a third-person view, in which we control Spider-Man, perform various tasks, fly on the web between high-rise buildings and fight with opponents. The game implements a system in which each of your actions will have far-reaching consequences, which means that during the passage the player has to make more balanced decisions. In general, the project turned out to be bright, colorful and quite dynamic.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock

release date: 2012

Genre: Action adventure

An exciting action-adventure game based on the popular British television series Doctor Who. In the role of the famous Doctor and his companion, we will travel through time and space, putting together parts of an ancient artifact. Moreover, as the plot develops, players will have to make various decisions that will affect the further development of the situation and even the emergence of new mysteries. Among the opponents are Cybermen, Daleks, Silurians and agents of Silence.

At the time the game was released, it had many critical bugs, which is why many reviewers gave it low marks, but the developers reacted quite quickly and released a large update that not only fixed the shortcomings, but also added new locations to the plot.

The Silent Age

release date: 2012

Genre: Puzzle, point-and-click

An atmospheric point-and-click quest in which events unfold in two time periods - the real 1972 and the apocalyptic 2012. The main character will have to uncover the secret of the death of humanity, using a unique time travel device to solve puzzles.

The gameplay here is simple and extraordinary - traditionally for the genre, we move across the screens, collecting objects and using them in the necessary places. However, the story unfolding before our eyes deserves the highest marks. Well-developed characters interesting riddles and a deep plot will keep you glued to the screen until the end credits. Also worth mentioning is the very atmospheric soundtrack. Can you save civilization?

Endless summer

release date: 2013

Genre: Eroge, visual novel, novel,

A visual novel from Russian developers, which tells the story of how a simple guy Semyon accidentally traveled back in time, ending up in 1980 at the pioneer camp “Ovenok”. At the same time, the hero himself began to look like a seventeen-year-old teenager. And even though Semyon’s initial goal was to return to his home world, very soon he plunged headlong into the camp routine, which, depending on the player’s actions, because it is the decisions made that will directly determine how what happened will turn out for the hero.

The gameplay in the game is typical for most representatives of the genre - we have a story presented in the form of text and static pictures replacing each other. From time to time we need to choose the character's answer or action and enjoy the further development of the plot.

Chronology

Release date: 2014

Genre: Platformer, puzzle

A puzzle platformer in which we play as a scientist trying to use a time machine to change the gloomy present and make it vibrant and colorful. Very soon the main character meets a talking snail that can stop time, and goes on a journey with such an assistant. The game has nice hand-drawn graphics, an excellent soundtrack, interesting riddles and an interesting plot that combines simple and understandable humor with deep thoughts about existence.

In the game we move through time, explore two-dimensional levels and solve various puzzles. Each level can be visited as in the past, which means that actions taken in the past will be reflected in the future. You can and should switch between the scientist and the snail, since each of the heroes has its own skills, for example, in addition to managing time, the snail can crawl along walls and ceilings, and the scientist jumps on platforms.

Tick Tock Isle

release date Date: 2015

An indie adventure game with pixelated 2D graphics in which we control a watchmaker. Our character's task is to repair a huge clock that is located on the roof of a tower located on an abandoned island. And so, the hero walks around the location, finds a watch, fixes it, and then BAM - he is transported in time! This is where the plot of this exciting adventure begins.

The gameplay in the game is very simple - we wander around locations, periodically activate various mechanisms, collect and use objects and communicate with the surrounding characters. Pleases a large number of jokes and references to everything possible. The plot is interesting and unobtrusive, and the game itself is played without much difficulty. In general, you can brighten up one or two evenings with this toy.

Deponia Doomsday

release date: 2016

Genre: Indie Adventure,

A worthy old-style quest with a two-dimensional picture and inventory littered with all sorts of “junk,” which is a prequel to the trilogy about the adventures of the klutz mechanic Rufus. The plot of the game is built on the interweaving of different time periods, probabilities and realities. Deponia and Elysium are about to be destroyed, and while trying to fix it, Rufus ends up in a time loop.

In terms of its gameplay, the project is no different from previous parts of the series, but the plot, involving the intricacies of time travel, can intrigue. In addition, traditionally the story about Rufus is filled with sharp humor, many subtle hints and references. An excellent, bright continuation of Deponia, which will surely appeal to fans of the series, as well as to all fans of quests.

Time management games

One of my favorite games is Braid. But this is not because it has colorful scenery, a mysterious plot, and classic platformer mechanics. The main thing in this game is the ability to personally manage time!

Modern science has studied space and matter, its properties and laws of behavior in sufficient detail. And all that science has managed to learn about time is only that it moves inexorably forward. In this area, fiction makes a much greater contribution than mainstream science by trying to fantasize about "What if?" There are a great many books, films and games on the topic of time management and time travel.

I present to you a list of games whose mechanics use time management:

Braid(platformer, 2009)

Rewind time, stop time, time is tied to the character’s movements, temporary doubles, time dilation.

(platformer, 2010)

Temporary doubles.

(platformer, 2014)

We play as an elderly inventor, moving between two different times. By changing something in the past, we get results in the future.

(action, 2007)

Rewind time, stop time.

(action, 2010)

Changing the age of objects and enemies, moving between different times.

(shooter, 2013)

Time is tied to the character's movements.

(RTS strategy, 2011)

Timeline, moving units into the past or future, time doubles.

(3D platformer, 2003 - 2005)

The main character moves between two different times. By changing something in the past, we immediately get results in the future. Rewind time (only as a means of escape).

Reset(action puzzle, in development)

We play as a lonely robot in an empty city of the future. In the game you need to help yourself from the future, moving through time and changing your own life.

And also many games with the ability to slow down time (Slo-mo):

Max Payne, GTA V, F.E.A.R., Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Stranglehold, Dishonored.

Game plots like "Time Travel"

The next batch of games. In them you cannot decide for yourself where to move in time, all this happens only in the plot. Nevertheless, watching the development of such twisted plots is a special pleasure.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert(RTS strategy, 1996 - 2008)

The plot of the game series is based on Einstein traveling back in time to kill Hitler and avoid World War II, but this leads to a more serious and bloody war between the USSR and NATO. Subsequent events in the plot are also connected with the time machine.

Assassin's Creed(action with open world, 2007 - 2015)

The entire game series is based on the idea that you can observe the events of the past by studying the human genome and synchronizing the ancestral memory embedded in it. The Animus device is not quite a full-fledged time machine, but a very convenient interactive window into the past.

(action, 2013)

The creator of the flying city of Columbia owns the technology of "tears" with which he can look into and move into different futures. The game world consists of many parallel realities that arise due to the multivariate actions of people.

(action, 2009)

The plot of the game tells the story of a man who has received superpowers related to electricity. But later it turns out that all the problems happened due to the use of the time machine, and there are secret characters from the future around.

(shooter, 2009)

A small group of adventurers travels back in time to take part in the most significant military conflicts in order to change their outcome. (Interesting story idea, but the game itself is of very low quality).

Serious Sam(shooter, 2001 - 2011)

The game series tells the story of a brutal man sent back in time to save the earth from alien invaders. The game allows you to run through the cities of ancient Egypt, Babylon, medieval Europe and other historical places with modern rocket launchers and machine guns.

Back to the Future: The Game(quest, 2010)

A quest based on the legendary film of the same name. Time travel takes place using a special car. The game does not copy the plot of the film, but develops it further.

A New Beginning: Final Cut(quest, 2012)

A group of scientists travel back in time to visit an elderly bioengineer in order to avoid climate catastrophe in the future.

(quest, 2014)

The main character is a teenage schoolgirl who discovers the ability to rewind time.

Endless summer(visual novel, 2013)

A Russian game that tells the story of a modern guy who inexplicably moved to a pioneer summer camp in the 1980s. Here he has a chance to correct his life and himself.

Time travel and time management attract not only science fiction writers and directors. Game designers are immersing themselves in similar themes with equal zeal, creating games in which characters find themselves in the past, go to the future, or have the opportunity to rewind time to correct own mistakes. You and I would not refuse such a unique chance - but, alas, for now it exists only in the games, the list of which is in front of you.

Time Recoil

How to integrate time management mechanics into a top-down shooter? It's simple. By destroying enemies, players slow down their progress, and this helps to cope with the growing number of opponents in slow motion mode. This interesting idea is complemented by hand-drawn levels, destructible environments, a wide range of weapons and enemies, as well as complex AI that will not allow you to relax.

Plants vs. Zombies™ 2

Perhaps the most famous game in the lane defense genre offers not only battles between plants and insidious zombies, but also various worlds and eras. Zombie mummies from Ancient Egypt and zombie pirates, the distant future and a half-forgotten past - gamers will find a huge variety of content and a lot of fresh ideas. Zombies attack everywhere, but plants will be able to defend themselves, not without the help of gamers, of course.

Under The Sun

Don't waste your time! In this stylish 3D puzzler, every step you take must be precise to the smallest detail, otherwise the character will grow old and die without ever reaching the goal - the fire blazing on the island. Time is inexorable: with every step the hero of the game grows old, the trees around him grow, the bridges deteriorate, everything changes. The saving grace is that you can turn back time and walk the path to the fire again to finally make it before sunset.

Future Sense

Here, time management takes place against the backdrop of an adventure plot, where you have to correct the mistakes of the past with your actions in the future. You need to be extremely careful not to collide with yourself, not to aggravate the situation, in order to have time to reveal all the secrets of this game - this is the only way you can see the complete mosaic of the ongoing story.

Cut the Rope: Time Travel

Handsome Om Nom decided to go back in time, and it seems that the candies that existed there are no less appetizing. Players will have to help a cute monster hunt for candy in the Middle Ages and Ancient Egypt, in the Wild West and in the Stone Age. Times and eras change, only candy remains unchanged - this is what the main character of the Cut the Rope series is trying to prove to us.

Time Travel Escape

The authors of this game are looking for a time traveler - someone who will dare to visit medieval Japan, pay a visit to glacial period, to get to Europe during the time of Napoleon, while managing to return back and not break anything. The chain of logical puzzles offered here is fascinating and interconnected, and each player's action has meaning and consequences.

Time Turner

Developers who are trying to implement the idea of time travel in their games work best with puzzlers - it is in them that such ideas look most natural. In this project, gamers will have to go through a storyline enriched with a narrative of love, solving puzzles and manipulating time.

Tap Adventure: Time Travel

As it turns out, the mechanics of time travel can be successfully used in an RPG clicker. In addition to exploring worlds, developing their characters, fighting monsters and bosses, selecting weapons and equipment, and collecting loot, players will have to create time loops - this good way return to the past for a rich reward. Moreover, all these actions require simple taps - what could be simpler?!

Wheelie 4 - Time Travel

The travels of a small but cute car through time and space look interesting. They are based on puzzles - not too difficult, but fun. Passing level after level of this game will most likely interest younger gamers, but they also need to hone their logical skills on something, you must agree.
